I will not be beating around the bushes. This post is going to be short and to the point. So what is high protein diet all about?
Who was Dr. Blackburn?
The principle of the protein diet or high protein diet, if you want, was first described by Dr. Georges L. Blackburn. He was a surgeon, clinician, researcher, teacher and author and he specialised in the study of obesity and nutrition. Together with his colleagues he built the foundation for what we today call nutrition medicine.
Among his achievements you can find help with the development of the gastric bypass surgery and nutritional liquid diets. What interests us most is his “protein sparing” diet. He based it on his study of inadequate nutritional management of people who were in hospital. Simply said, they were underfed.
What is high protein diet about in a nutshell?
Protein diet = ketogenic diet. Ketose = limited supply of carbohydrates in a person´s diet -> stocked fat becomes the main source of energy 🙂
At the same time the ketogenic substances dampen the feeling of hunger and create a feeling of good mood and energy! Soooo…. you do not suffer like with some other diets :-). I can personally attest to this as I have tried it myself. In fact, I am still adhering to its principles.
Does protein diet work?
A high protein diet is about efficient and relatively fast weight loss. Thanks to regular intake of proteins, the body starts burning primarily fats.
Is high protein diet bad?
It is not harmful to the organism because we provide our body with natural substances. Unlike various magical pills and starvation, which totally kill your body. The high protein diet is a completely SAFE and EFFECTIVE way of weight reduction for a HEALTHY person.
What about the yo yo effect?
As one of few , there is not the so-called yo yo effect because it is divided into 4 phases, in which we slowly return to carbohydrate intake. Of course, sticking to the return phases is very important! For the future: You will learn to eat regularly and in a healthier way. There is only one minus: It requires a strong will … especially during the first week :-).
In my next post, I will tell you about how my week 1 of the first phase of this diet went. I was a bit afraid but more about that in the post.
